Senators to Introduce Anti-LNG Exports Bill

Sens. Markey and Warren to Introduce Anti-LNG Export Bill
Although it has no chance of enactment during the current Congress, the two Democratic Senators from Massachusetts—Sens. Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren—announced last week (Oct. 08) that they plan to introduce legislation to block construction of a natural gas compression station in Weymouth, Mass. “that is part of a project by Canadian oil company Enbridge intended to send natural gas through Massachusetts to export out to Canada.” While aimed at this one specific compressor station, the bill (attached) is drafted in such a way to block any and all new compressor stations “as part of a project that would lead to or facilitate natural gas exports.” The short title of the Markey-Warren bill is the Community Outreach, Maintenance, and Preservation by Restricting Export Stations from Subverting Our Regulations (COMPRESSOR) Act. BTW and FWIW, Sen. Markey is also sponsoring S. 2527—the BAN Oil Exports Act—that would reinstate the crude oil export ban that had been in place for 30 years before being lifted in Dec. 2015.
