House Committee Passes LNG Bill

Fred H. Hutchison, President & CEO of LNG Allies, issued the following statement following House Committee approval of H.R. 4606, the “Ensuring Small Scale LNG Certainty and Access Act” on a bipartisan vote:

“Once again, Republicans and Democrats on the House Energy & Commerce Committee have joined together to move an important bill to improve the regulatory process for U.S. LNG export projects. Although the legislation applies only to projects with a planned export capacity of 1 million tons per year or less, today’s 35 to 15 vote demonstrates that LNG—unlike many other U.S. energy issues—remains a bipartisan congressional priority.”

“Today’s action means that smaller-scale LNG export project applications could soon be approved by the Secretary of Energy ‘without modification or delay,’ which is the standard that already applies to applications to export U.S. natural gas to nations that have a free trade agreement with the United States. Ultimately, we would like to see all LNG export applications approved under that standard irrespective of the size of the project, and today’s vote is a good first step in that direction.”

“We are particularly grateful for the continued LNG leadership of Reps. Bill Johnson (R-Ohio) and Gene Green (D-Texas) the two members who hammered out the bipartisan solution that now goes to the full House of Representatives for consideration.”
