LNG Allies Thanks Presidents Trump and Juncker for LNG Trade Announcement
WASHINGTON — July 25, 2018 — U.S. President Donald J. Trump and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker met at the White House today and held a joint press conference afterwards. Both presidents mentioned that a core area of U.S.-E.U. trade cooperation going forward would be in liquefied natural gas (LNG).
President Trump said: “We agreed to strengthen our strategic cooperation with regard to energy. The European Union wants to import more liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States. And, they’re going to be a very big buyer. We’re going to make it much easier for them, but they’re going to be a massive buyer of LNG, so that they’ll be able to diversify their energy supply, which they want very much to do. And, we have plenty of it [LNG].”
President Junker said: “We have decided to strengthen our cooperation on energy. We will build more terminals to import liquefied natural gas from the U.S. This is also a message for others…”
Fred H. Hutchison, President & CEO of LNG Allies, had this comment: “LNG Allies has been working with several E.U. member states, the White House, and others for many months to encourage expanded U.S.-E.U. LNG cooperation. The United States has abundant natural gas resources, a burgeoning LNG export industry, and the advantage of close proximity to Europe. On the other side of the Atlantic, Europe has a well-developed—but underutilized—network of LNG import terminals, a good and improving system of pipelines, and the stated desire to use more natural gas. While the devil is always in the detail, we believe that commercial LNG trade between America and Europe is destined to expand dramatically over the next few years. We welcome today’s announcement as recognition that U.S.-E.U. LNG trade is in the strategic and economic interest of both sides.”
